ACCOMMODATION FOR INTERNATIONAL STUDENTS IN AUSTRALIA

Accommodation

To get the most out of your education, it is best you immerse yourself in the student community of your institution to meet like-minded friends and explore the student lifestyle facilitated by the community. Other than renting or buying your own home, there are other options such as homestay and student apartments which provide opportunities to engage with the student community allowing you to get the most out of your educational experience.

Student Apartments

We can arrange for our students to have opportunities to live close to or on campus in student apartments which provides a safe and secure environment where you are surrounded by like-minded students pursuing their dreams, just like you. If you feel concerned or are unsure about something, support teams at student apartments are ready to answer any questions you may have to help you settle in your new home and institution. Being so close to your campus means less travel time, allowing you to spend more of your time on campus to immerse yourself in the lifestyle facilitated by the institution of your study.

Homestays

If you wish to experience the culture and lifestyle of the country of your study destination, then we can also arrange homestay accommodation where you will be able to study in the comfort of your own room whilst sharing meals with your new family. Living at a Homestay provides you with the opportunity to make new friends with locals who will help you settle in your new home and introduce you to their culture. Often, homestays provide homes to more than one student which makes students feel like they are in a big family which is beneficial in making you feel less homesick and helping you settle in.

Guardianship

If you are under 18, you are legally required to have a guardian for your duty of care. The guardian’s role is to help the student settle in their new home, provide meals and ultimately help the student’s journey.

In addition to other essential documents for your student visa application, students under 18 years of age require the Confirmation of Appropriate Accommodation and Welfare (CAAW) document which confirms their welfare arrangements and allows the immigration department to start processing the application.

Students under 18 years of age have the following options regarding their guardianship:

  1. The student’s mother or father can be appointed as their guardian. The parent will have to apply for a guardian visa which allows them to accompany the student for the duration of their study or until they are 18 years old, whichever is earlier.
  2. In the case that the parents do not wish to accompany the student, the parents can appoint a family nominated relative to be the guardian of the student. It is important to note that the relative is defined by The Department of Home Affairs as a brother, sister, uncle, aunt, niece, nephew or grandparent. They must also be aged 21 or over and of good character.
  3. If the student’s parents or relatives do not wish or cannot be the guardian of the student, we will request the education provider to arrange guardianship alongside homestay for the student. This arrangement needs to be specified in the student’s admission application as the education provider requires time to find a suitable carer from their network of immigration approved guardians, considering the student’s preferences provided.
