Scholarships for International Year 12 Students

Scholarships for International Year 12 Students: What Exists, How to Win Them, and How We Help

Here’s the biggest mistake we see every year: great students leave money on the table because they don’t know what’s available, they think they are underqualified or they assume it’s “too hard.” It isn’t. You just need a simple plan.

A few months back, one of our Year 12 students almost skipped scholarships altogether. We built a shortlist, flagged two “auto-assessed” awards, and drafted one targeted application. Result: thousands off first-year fees and a much easier financial journey throughout university

This article is that plan.

What Scholarships Are Out There?

Merit (academics):
For strong Year 12 results. Examples include:

  • Curtin – Australian Year 12 Scholarship: Usually 25% of tuition for the first year of study (maximum 200 credit points) Auto-assessed based on your course application. curtin.edu.au
  • UNSW – International Student Award: 15% toward tuition each year for eligible students from 2025 or 2026. UNSW Scholarships
  • Macquarie – Vice-Chancellor’s International Scholarship (VCIS): up to A$10,000 toward tuition fees for high achievers. Macquarie University+1

Other categories:

  • Field of study (e.g., engineering, business, health)
  • Leadership & service

  • Elite sport

  • Equity/need-based (financial hardship, regional background)

Government & external awards (check uni and national portals)

“Do I Need a Separate Application?”

Sometimes no, many awards are automatic. The university assesses you at the time you apply for the course (no extra form). Other scholarships require a statement, references or an interview.

The 4-Step Scholarship Plan (What We Recommend)

1) Spot
Create a fast list across your target unis: merit, faculty-specific, international awards, external/government. You should use the scholarship finder of your uni and your course pages.

2) Match
Sort into: Auto-assessed, Apply, Stretch (competitive). Note eligibility (ATAR/IB/NCEA bands, English, portfolio/interview, citizenship/visa status) and any exclusions.

3) Apply
For “Apply” items: draft one strong base statement and tailor it (why this course, impact, leadership/service, evidence). Line up referee(s) early.

4) Track
Log deadlines, required docs, and decision dates. Sync with your UAC and offer-round timelines so nothing collides.

How We Help (and Where Students Usually Get Stuck)

  • Discovery & shortlisting: We map your awards across your course targets (including auto-assessed options you might miss).

  • Eligibility check: We check academic and document requirements to save you from spending time on ineligible awards.

  • Application polish: We review statements, structure evidence, and prep you for interviews (if required).

  • Deadline control: We run the calendar and chase confirmations so you don’t.

Offer alignment: We compare scholarships against fees, deposit due dates, and intake timing to pick the best overall package, not just the biggest headline.

Quick Wins You Can Do Today

  • Make a list of your target unis and open their scholarship pages, star 3-5 relevant scholarship awards per uni.
  • Mark which are automatic vs application-based.
  • Draft a 250-400 word base statement (impact, leadership, results, why this program).

  • Ask one teacher or mentor for a generic reference you can adapt.

Put all dates in your calendar (scholarship + course + UAC offer rounds).

FAQs

Yes. Many universities advertise that international students can receive awards for completing Year 12 in Australia (or equivalent).

Sometimes. It depends on the rules of the university – some awards can’t be combined. Always Read the Conditions on the Scholarship Page/offer Letter.

Ask us about pathways (foundation/diploma/bridging). You might still access merit or faculty awards along that route, depending on the uni’s policy. We are experts in pathways and ensuring all of our clients reach their dream courses.
